Sour Cherry Oatmeal Crumble

You can have a delicious cherry crumble coming out of the oven in under half an hour, and with only 10 minutes active work on your part.

You do this using a jar of home-canned sour cherry pie filling, and a cup of oatmeal pancake mix from dry storage.

(To be clear, this is a “cooking with canning you have already done” recipe. This is not a recipe for canning. You cannot can crumble.)

Yield: 1  crumble 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch)

Oven temperature: 175 C (350 F)

Baking time: 20 to 25 minutes

Sour Cherry Oatmeal Crumble

A delicious quick crumble made using your home-canned sour cherry pie filling.

Ingredients

  • 1 half-litre jar sour cherry pie filling (1 pint)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 150 g oatmeal pancake mix (1 cup)

Instructions

  • Start oven heating to 175 C (350 F).
  • Spray baking pan lightly (or grease.)
  • Empty jar of pie filling into the baking pan. Set aside.
  • In a bowl, beat 1 egg, then stir in 1 tbsp honey.
  • Little by little, mix in 1 cup (150 g) of the oatmeal pancake mix.
  • Spoon in dollops over top of pie filling.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes at 350 F / 175 C.
  • Remove from oven, let cool for about 5 minutes before serving for the filling to set a bit.

Recipe notes

Use a baking pan no bigger than 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm).

Try not to overhandle the crumble topping while mixing to prevent tough gluten from developing.

Yes, you could use any of your home-canned fruit pie fillings in this recipe.

Nutrition

Calculations include both crumble “filling” and “top crust”.

Nutritional values per portion will vary wildly based on whether you made the pie filling with or without sugar.

If you use sugar-free cherry pie filling:
